END NOTES FOR GEORGE HENRY PALMER
1. "I was Born on the 16th day of April 1840 in the town of Leonardsville Madison County, New York." George does not name his father, but identifies him as the captain of the company that he served in during the Civil War and this man was George Washington Palmer. (See his entry.) Luff, Journal of George Palmer, 1,3. His father’s name is given in George H.'s biography in Noyes F. Palmer, Palmer Records (Brooklyn: Union-Argus, 1881), 260. Palmer, d. 7 April 1901. His birth and death years are found on his gravestone (digital image) in Arlington Cemetery, "Major George Henry Palmer," Findagrave, 7836844. His headstone in the Monmouth Cemetery (digital image) also has his birth and death dates, "Maj. George Henry Palmer," Findagrave, 97164493. Estelle’s maiden name is also found on their joint gravestone in Arlington Cemetery. The date and place of Estelle's birth are from Estelle Palmer’s declaration for a Civil War widow's pension, author's copy. Her death date and burial place are from "U.S. National Cemetery Interment Control Forms," Ancestry, entry for Estelle Hoban Palmer, married as Julia Estelle Hoban, widow of George H. Palmer, Major, 4th U.S. Infantry, died 1 November 1933, interred 2 November 1933.
